The Ontario legislature has passed a bill invoking the notwithstanding clause to limit third-party election advertising

Bill 307 used the notwithstanding clause to reintroduce parts of a law struck down by a judge last week.A judge found it was unconstitutional for the government to double the restricted pre-election spending period for third-party advertisements to 12 months before an election call.

The Progressive Conservative government argued the extended restriction was necessary to protect elections from outside influence. The bill passed this afternoon after a marathon weekend debate in which opposition politicians argued the government was trying to silence criticism ahead of next June's provincial election.

Really Dougie. Are you running scared?

I’m going invoke the notwithstanding clause I have with pissing in public. Next week I’m notwithstanding taxes.

Can we have a more embarrassing Premier than fordnation? disgusting

Doug is terrified that people will put up billboards reminding the public of his complete shit job over this pandemic, and then he'll lose the election. He prefers to take his chances with the public's' short memory.

I'm disgusted with Ford.

What is Ford afraid of?

So many sheep here. They are told to be outraged and they are. He is reinstating what Wynne already had in place- why no outrage when she did it? He is extending 6 mos

Good for you premier- lots lf people not educated on this. Toi cant have unlimited spending on an election

Does that limit them too at least? Or, have they figured out how to get around it? They must have surplus $$$ floating around from all of their donors.

Good

'rarely used...' Quebec saw fit to use it enough. The precedent is set. Get ready to see more of this from all the legislatures...

Me, town crier & former Harper bum boy Calandra, & my DollarStoreGovt are like the Republicans in USA, we're gonna try to rig the next election. We used the notwithstandingclause to make sure people that could make us look bad, are silenced well before anyone votes. onpoli

Vote expected on law that would limit third-party advertising during Ontario electionsThe Progressive Conservative government is using the notwithstanding clause – which lets legislatures override portions of the charter – to reintroduce part of a law declared unconstitutional by a judge last week Great news! Teacher unions have far too much influence in this regard. The law already exists thanks to Wynne's Liberals. The issue is whether to stop union ads 12 months before election or keep it to 6 months. Isn’t anyone concerned about the frivolous use of the notwithstanding clause to override the constitution? It’s always the usual Conservative suspects
