The BA.2 variant is a spinoff of the original Omicron variant — now called BA.1 — and appeared in the U.K. and India last month. The original Omicron was declared a variant of concern by the WHO on Nov. 27, 2021.
Katelyn Jetelina, an epidemiologist at the UT Health Science Centre in Houston, said one trait of BA.2 was that it is much harder to detect than BA.1. “On Friday, the U.K. labelled BA.2 a variant under investigation as it’s doubling every four days there, which equates to a 120 per cent growth advantage over BA.1,” she reported in a COVID state of affairs statement released Monday. “But it’s likely nothing like the huge transmissibility jump we saw from Delta to Omicron.”Article content
“We do continue to see a gradual decline in our case rates over time and a levelling off of the test positivity, and as you know, the numbers of daily cases gives us a sense of trends using that one piece of surveillance data,” Henry said. “But we also have other surveillance data that also supports that we are on that downward trend in community infections.”Article content
