Jennifer Brady gets carrots from her garden with her son Levi, 7, at their Halifax home on Friday, August 5, 2022. Brady has lymphedema and recently spent $80,000 to get surgery in Japan, a procedure that's not covered by Nova Scotia's Medical Services Insurance. - Ryan TaplinThe procedure, lymphovenous anastomosis, is done all over the world. It connects damaged lymph vessels to a nearby vein. A healthy lymphatic system recycles whatever leaks out of veins, arteries and capillaries.

"In the short term I want the surgery covered," said Brady."In the long term, we need research and effective lymphedema treatment in Nova Scotia. Her year-long battle highlights the lack of options for people suffering with lymphedema in this province. "It’s one thing for lymphedema to affect your day-to-day activities, but it’s another when it’s actually making you sick from infections," Vorstenbosch said."When it requires antibiotics and hospital admission, that’s a big deal.

“We give a great deal of discretion to the legislative and executive branch medical system and the courts are reluctant to interfere with that,” said MacKay. “That’s the bottom line.”
