Dr. Andrew Furey gives his acceptance speech as leader of the provincial Liberal Party and premier-designate at the St. John's Convention Centre in St. John's on Monday, August 3, 2020.
In his victory speech, Furey called on the province’s residents to stand together through the difficult times ahead. The son of Senate Speaker George Furey said overcoming the province’s economic crisis is not a short-term proposition, and he warned of unspecified “tough decisions” that will have to be made.
Each candidate was allowed to bring five guests, and Ball made remarks from an event at Deer Lake on the island’s west coast, broadcast to the large, sparsely occupied convention hall over video. Furey called the figure “overwhelming,” but he pointed to tough economic times in the province’s past and to jurisdictions around the world that are spending heavily to deal with the pandemic.“Frankly, on the back-of-napkin math, I thought it would be a bit more,” he said of the deficit figure. “Everyone at home should rest assured that this is a top priority for me.”
