Netflix reduces video quality in Canada to lower internet bandwidth use

Netflix is lowering video quality for its subscribers in Canada as it attempts to reduce soaring demands on internet bandwidth.

The streaming giant says it will introduce changes today that are designed to slash its data traffic by 25 per cent as internet service providers deal with a surge in user activity in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The lower bandwidth streams of Netflix programs should still deliver the usual quality of each plan, the company said, whether it's ultra-high definition 4K, high-definition or standard definition. Coronavirus newsletter sign-up: Get The COVID-19 Brief sent to your inbox In a blog post last week, the company's vice president of content delivery explained that Netflix has many different levels of streaming quality for each title within each resolution tier. With the changes, Ken Florance said Netflix is simply removing the highest bandwidth streams from the platter of options. The move comes as telecom companies see a rise in data usage while Canadians self-isolate at home and use streaming services more frequently than usual. Netflix has already introduced bandwidth measures in other parts of the word over the past two weeks. Similar reductions in video quality were made in Europe, India, Australia, New Zealand and some Latin American countries. RELATED IMAGES Read more: CTV News

Canada to help world's poor cope with COVID-19, amid UN appeal: aid ministerInternational Development Minister Karina Gould says Canada will spend millions to help the world's most desperate people fight COVID-19 because it is in the country's long-term security interest as well as being the right thing to do. Why? Why are we sending money anywhere but Canadians? We're already pulling almost $100 billion out of thin air, why are we printing more money to send to the third world? Why? Canada has done its part already. We need a 'Canada First' policy. Canada is about to BECOME the World's poor with this.

Well, if Canadians were smart, everyone should cancel their subscription right effin now. Sadly, we are not smart and we will put up with this crap. THAT’S what happened 🤦🏻‍♀️ It’s so laggy and slow now. I’m done. Pls read the article 😂... “But you will still get the video quality you paid for” Netflix_CA I am paying for HD quality and if I see any noticeable video degradation because of your change then I'll be cancelling my service faster than you can say 'Oh Canada!' 😡👎

Obviously no one here read the article. It clearly states that video quality remains the same - just the stream changes. Instead of reducing here in Canada y not start in the states Lower quality, lower price!!!!! Netflix here sucks anyway. The American one is much better. There are more important things going on in our world right now than before no able to get THE most PERFECT picture. Happy to have it without buffering.

Looking for that discount Netflix_CA

When all this is over, green oil is going to be a thing in CanadaOpinion: Canadians can be confident that fossil fuel and climate change can work together This is exactly what most climate scientists have been saying all along. We need fossil fuels or we should keep fossil fuels. Dumbass National Post! Who writes this stupid post? 🙄

No wonder the offerings are suboptimal Are they going to lower the price too? CTVAtlantic Well y subscription rate should be reduced to coincide with lower quality, FFS ! Netflix is an American company screw Canada before America!! Hey commentors/complainers, how do you solidier on with so many of those first-world problems? Asking for a friend. 🙄

DICKS. Project free TV. Shockshare. Tubi! lol Thats aweful! Our slow internet connection with our provider is all ready slow af! Sheesh how about slow the payments too, give a big discount💯

Militarizing Canada-U.S. Border Isn’t Necessary, Trudeau SaysThe U.S. is on track to surpass China in the number of COVID-19 cases. Restricting travel from hot spots isn’t necessary! What’s wrong with us. We just to nice. Really, I just watched the news. They deployed National Guard to 3 states (at least) so it's obvious the next step would entail defending all borders with force. Is there a misquote in the article? 'Canada and the U.S. have the longest militarized border in the world and it is very much in both of our interests for it to remain that way,” Trudeau said.' Non-militarized?

So I pay more for high-quality and I don’t get high quality seems fair. 🤷🏻‍♂️ We’re in a global crisis, but some of the resposes below...first world problems much? Calm down, folks. Then they better be slashing the monthly fees as well!! 😧 Can they add more movies? Especially now? Its kinda sucky Read the article before you say 'give me my money back'

Why FakeNewsMedia Mines just fine. So is Prime I wonder if they will reduce the monthly fee for HD subscriptions Great job Netflix!!!

Jack M. Mintz: Canada needs to think BIG now to avoid a long, deep recessionFederal and provincial governments still need to do much more to fight the pandemic and economic crisis — and they need to do it fast Problem is they think climate change is still a huge issue. Until that sort of thinking stops liberals are doomed to make the same mistakes over and over. SpotShopMedia Yeah Blackface is quite the 'leader' It's Alpha not Beta time! WakeUp OrdoAbChao

Yea time to cancel now I dumped Netflix ages ago. We pay the same price as other countries but get a fraction of the content. Guys..... not to sound like an ass but there is a crisis going on. So what if it's not the highest HD quality. People are dying. Stop complaining and just be happy you are healthy.

So the US can keep their high bandwith I guess. netflix really?! That explains a lot I love black and white movies Then reduce the price. That's great, except I pay more for the higher quality. So what now? Same with monthly fee? internet speed also reduced 12pm to 12am also... 🙄 why dont nobody look into that? I guess that is understandable. not complaining but just saying.

Grunwald says Canada Basketball will ‘defer our excitement’ in wake of Olympic postponementThe country’s basketball program was looking ahead to a potential landmark year before coronavirus upended the sports world
