According to a staff report that will go before city council this week, the province has asked Children's Services to confirm that the operating costs for the 51 planned facilities would be covered within its existing budget and “not through new provincial operating funding.”
“An extension to the deadline would allow Children's Services to have more insight into its expected financial opportunities and pressures in 2020 and future years, and would allow sufficient time to properly assess and prioritize the 51 projects,” the staff report notes. The 51 planned facilities represent 3,049 badly needed new child care spaces.
Speaking with reporters at a press conference on Tuesday, Ward 11 Coun.Mike Layton said that the province’s decision to no longer fund the operating costs will “hurt families across the city.”
The MPPs comments here are ridiculous. He thinks it’s good to profit off of kids and basically the priority should be saving money. Maybe the 20% increase to MPPs living expenses would be a better place to cut than the quality of a baby’s food?
For those of you who say we shouldnt have non-profit daycare are then guess what. One parent stays at home and isnt making an income and not paying income taxes.
Canada invested in children and makes sense to help foot the bill. To what extent is tricky one side tax payers say no but other hand is we need population along with cost of living income etc. Similar to school not everyone uses it but we all pay for it.
if you have kids you should be paying for child care. you made a choice to have children, you can figure out a way to care for them and school them. medical care, i'd gladly share my money with you though. Those are tax dollars well spent.
No tax payer should be footing any support for day care for anyone`s children. This has to stop. You have them you pay for them.
