Residents will have their say on the Halifax Regional Police budget next week

A Halifax Regional Police officer collects evidence at a shooting scene on Cutler Avenue in Dartmouth on Dec. 22, 2022. The force is looking to increase its budget and hire three more officers and two civilians. - Ryan TaplinRCMP and Halifax Regional Police are looking for more officers and operational funding to keep up with a growing municipality.

HRP looks to hire five people — three officers and two civilians — and the RCMP wants to add 16 front-line officers to the Halifax district over the next three years. HRP is looking to hire for five positions: three sergeants, a police psychologist and an occupational health nurse. The draft of the HRP budget was first released in December but has been revised. Since then, the budget committee changed the target of an eight per cent increase to the average property tax bill to four per cent last month, so the HRP budget needs to be shaved down to meet the new target.
