Habs trade Kovalchuk to Caps for 2020 3rd round pick. TradeCentre MORE:

The Montreal Canadiens have traded forward Ilya Kovalchuk to the Washington Capitals in exchange for 2020 third-round pick.Kovalchuk, 36, has nine goals and 22 points in 39 games between his time with the Canadiens and Los Angeles Kings this season. After posting nine points across 17 games with the Kings, he benefited from a change of scenery in Montreal.

The Maurice Richard Trophy-winner and three-time All-Star has 919 games of NHL regular season experience to draw upon, including 872 points across those 15 seasons. He last appeared in the playoffs with the New Jersey Devils in 2011-12, ultimately falling 4-2 to Los Angeles in the Stanley Cup Final. Kovalchuk originally signed a three-year, $18.75 million free agent contract with the Kings before the 2018-19 season but only appeared in 89 games with the club. Both parties agreed to terminate the deal on Dec. 17 before he signed a one-year, $700K 35+ contract with the Canadiens on Jan. 3.

JayAndDan Wow! That’s all it took! Would’ve liked to have seen the Flyers jump on the train! NowOrNever

tsnjamesduthie nobody fell for the no trade line you gave the other day. 😕 at least you’ll have something to talk about first thing!

He wanted to go too a contender! This is something we are not. 2nd would have been ideal, but a third works imo. Still can sign him next year if we still wanted for 1yr term if needed. He looked like he truly enjoyed it here.

Hate to see him go, was fun watching him play in a Habs uniform but honestly would love to see him win a cup with ovi this year

I don’t have a horse in this race, but isn’t 3rd rd a f you to the guy? Also don’t care, but deadline is tomorrow and that’s it? Caps are 1 of 4 teams that will win it, so he gets a ring for a 3rd round? Just tell me this makes sense. * * full disclosure, Sens fan.

Wtf?Habs not fond of playoffs?

Awwww

Pricetastic31 what do you think?

I don’t think this helps Washington unless Oshie, Ovechkin and other goal scorers get injured. Then again ... last chance Kovalchuk will ever get to win a cup (and wearing red). I hope he leaves it all out there. Can’t complain going to Washington and having a shot at one!

TSNHockey Habs fans don’t learn. Radulov did the same thing: Using the team as a way to get a better contract or move to a better team. Say a word or two in french to get the media to love you and pretend you care, then leave.

And in the who cares category.....
