ARLINGTON, Texas — Ahead of a World Series capping the pandemic-shortened season, baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said he hopes to keep two of this year’s innovations: expanded playoffs and starting extra innings with runners on second base.
After opening day was delayed from March 26 to July 23, MLB and the players’ association agreed to expand the number of teams in the playoffs from 10 to 16. Even before the pandemic, Manfred advocated a future expansion of the playoffs to 14 teams. "I think the players like it," Manfred said. "I think it’s really good from a safety and health perspective that keeps us from putting players in situations where they’re out there too long or in positions they’re not used to playing."
"The clubs have done a really good job locally and we tried to do a good job centrally," he added. "The liquidity is sufficient to get us through 2020. I think if we’re faced with limited activity next year and the kind of losses that we suffered this year, again, it will become more of a problem." He would not say whether he favours keeping the expansion of the designated hitter to the National League, citing the need to bargain on the topic with the players’ union. The expansion of active rosters from 26 to 28 players was specific to the stop of spring training in March and resumption in the summer.
"What people are telling me about kind of every measure for this year in terms of statistics is that 60 is just not a great sample size and you shouldn’t really put too much weight on it," he said.

Forget just adding the basement dwellers to the postseason, an expanded playoffs makes it boring for the top teams more. Teams like the Dodgers and Yankees won't have much to play for after April as they are just treading water wating for October.
long time baseball fan, season ticket holder. because of Manfred and his stupid rules, i have watched zero inning of playoff baseball, even though the team i follow was in them. every game that went extra innings i shut off because of his rules. until he is gone, so am i MLB
Cut the 1st two weeks and last 2 weeks of season. Put those games as part of 7-inning double headers on Saturday to keep those games. 7-inning double header was only rule change I liked. Don’t make postseason more than 12 teams.

Universal DH needs to be retained as well. You can count the number of pitchers, who can legitimately hit, on one hand. The NL did not go downhill as some predicted.

Both great ideas. Extra inning baseball is boring. This makes it exciting and moves it along. Expanded playoffs is also a no brainer.

Nobody likes the extra inning rule. It's total garbage. And we currently have a nearly perfect playoff system, so yes, by all means add more inferior teams and make it harder for the best teams to win titles. Idiocy.
