It probably doesn’t say anything good about humanity that properly washing our hands, the very least we can do to avoid becoming sick or passing illness onto others, proves such a big ask. But it does. We don’t do it. We won’t.
As before, we don’t know how bad things are, or will get. But when federal cabinet ministers are advising Canadians to stock up on canned goods and necessary medicines, as Health Minister Patty Hajdu did on Wednesday, you can assume that things aren’t going well.A friend of mine first warned me about this years ago. His company, Aereus Technologies, is in the business of killing germs and viruses. They’ve patented a technology that allows a copper coating to be applied to almost any surface.
It’s not like this is new advice. Scientists had this more or less figured out by the 19th century. You’ve probably heard about Joseph Lister, a British physician who, in the 1860s, changed modern medicine by having the surgeons under his charge wash their hands between treating patients. Before germs and viruses were understood, that wasn’t deemed necessary. Doctors themselves carried sickness from one patient to another in hospitals. Lister, and his contemporaries, put a stop to that.
And it’s worse for the rest of us. One of the most absurd parts of the unfolding epidemic — pandemic? — has the resurgence of helpful, almost plaintive, how-to guides on hand washing. “It’s generally best to wash your hands with soap and water,” the Mayo Clinic explains. “Handwashing can help prevent illness. It involves five simple and effective steps you can take to reduce the spread of diarrheal and respiratory illness so you can stay healthy,” reports the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.
Too many people are slobs.
The best way to protect yourself, from this and most everything else, is get yours ass out of the city and into a small town or rural location and stay there for the next fifty years.
And stay home if ill
