It’s still not even clear to a lot of Ontarians whether it’s OK to go for a walk or to visit a pharmacy while self-isolating because the directions from their public officials have not been absolut…

Some circumstances demand categorical instructions. Some call for qualified advice. Good leadership involves knowing the difference.This is well illustrated by comparing official communication to the public about self-isolation and about wearing masks.

But rather than offering a simple, unconditional explanation of what this means , the statement defines self-isolation as “only leaving home or seeing other people for essential reasons.” It took them a while, but the feds eventually figured this out. It’s the reason the only truly stark and simple directive in Williams’s entire statement is the one he makes when paraphrasing the federal government’s mandate for returning travellers to self-isolate: “You must not go to work, grocery stores or on walks.”What makes this communicating in a pandemic thing harder, though, is that under some circumstances, the all-out “don’t do that” approach isn’t appropriate.
