Marc Gold , Trudeau's new man in the Senate , says he intends to remain non-partisan

‘I see my role as the representative of the government in the Senate and the Senate to the government, not the representative of the Liberal party’

OTTAWA – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s new man in the Senate said he intends to remain non-partisan, even as he helps move Liberals bills through the red chamber. Senator Marc Gold was announced Friday as the government’s new representative in the Senate. Gold, a former law professor, had been a member of the Independent Senators Group, senators who don’t formally align with any party. “I see my role as the representative of the government in the Senate and the Senate to the government, not the representative of the Liberal party in the Senate,” he said. “I believe very deeply in the independence of the Senate and its evolution towards a less partisan institution.” Trudeau expelled Liberal senators from the party’s caucus in 2014, even before coming to power and has been appointing independent senators through a non-partisan process since he was elected. Most of the newly-appointed senators have chosen to sit with the Independent Senators Group, which has voted mostly in favour of government legislation, but has no tie to the Liberal party. Conservative Senators are still part of their party’s caucus and form the official opposition in the chamber. The representative position is meant to recognize the need for someone to steer the agenda, without a formal party structure. Alongside the independent group, which is the largest with 51 senators, there are the Conservatives with 23 and a new group called the Canadian Senators Group has 13, there are 11 non-affiliated Senators and seven vacant seats. The new Senate will have to manage legislation coming from a minority House of Commons. “I have confidence that the individual senators and the groups in the Senate will understand that the legislation we get from the House of Commons will be the product of compromise and multi-party support,” he said. There is a growing maturity in the Senate But he cautioned it’s hard to know exactly how this will all work out. “If you live by the crystal ball you have to have a strong stomach, because you’re going to be eating glass a lot of the time. I can’t predict how it will go.” In the election, the Liberals promised to introduce new legislation to change how the Senate is run. Current legislation recognizes and funds groups of senators under the old system where only a government and opposition existed. Gold said he wants those changes to take place, but also believes senators will be able to come together to address issues in the meantime. “I think working together with all groups and all leadership. I think we will continue to find the right balance,” he said. “There is a growing maturity in the Senate.” Gold replaces Senator Peter Harder who stepped down from the post in late November. • Email: rtumilty@postmedia.com | Twitter: ryantumilty Read more: National Post

Former Ottawa Senators D Marc Methot: 'I'm probably done playing hockey' - TSN.caIt appears Marc Methot's playing career has come to an end. The 33-year-old underwent knee surgery last January while a member of the Dallas Stars and told TSN Radio Ottawa 1200 on Thursday that he's unlikely to suit again in the NHL. You might want to fix that spelling error 'mental and physical excretion' unless that is related to Methot's diaper duties.

Highly unlikely. Eating at the political pig trough. Sooooeeeeeeee Oh please enough already .👎 is that a joke and pigs fly Trudeau appointed Senators are just like Liberal MPs. They have 3 choice, tow the party line, speak truth & get kicked out of caucus or keep quiet. Senate won’t be any different. cdnpoli

Health Minister says risk of coronavirus to Canadians remains lowPatty Hajdu said five or six people are under observation but there are no confirmed cases in Canada yet Everybody underplays a threat until it hits hard. Aren’t we better off preparing ourselves? coronovirus Low that it will come to Canada? Low that we are prepared? Low that we can contain it? Low that we don't know shit if and when it mutates? Tell the truth minister. I’m sure this attitude means they’re totally on top of it. I mean, it’s not like our cities are full of people coming in and out of China

Do you see the irony in that ? 'Trudeau's man in the Senate' will remain impartial. Were you smirking when you went with that or did it just go right over your head? cdnpoli Right. We shall find out pretty quickly if he is being honest about this or not. Be interesting if having been appointed by Trudeau, he will even be allowed.
