Maple Leafs place Jason Spezza, Aaron Dell on waivers

Spezza, 37, has skated in all three of Toronto's games so far this season. He has one assist and is minus-1 with 7:44 average time on ice per game.

Dell, 31, hasn't skated yet for the Maple Leafs, who he signed with this off-season after four seasons with the San Jose Sharks. Spezza and Dell combine to carry a cap hit of $1.5 million. Other NHL teams now have the option to claim these players. With the recent injury to forward Nicholas Robertson, the Maple Leafs appear to be attempting to create salary cap room in order to add another player to their roster.

So Dell is the new goalie in Edmonton then...

Rather than the MapleLeafs placing Spezza on waivers, who by the way has been great taking face offs, they should looking to address their goaltending concerns

10/10 on the draw and he gets put on waivers. Vesey is non existant, robertson is hurt and if Marincib makes another appearance someone has some splaining to do.

Terrible decision. Spezza was 10 for 10 on face offs last night.

Not impossible but very rare for a player 35 years or older to get claimed off of waivers so we'll see but I expect he would clear. Dell on the other hand is another story especially with the Oilers in need of another goalie.

This makes no sense. Spezza and Mathews are the only centres that win face offs. A lot of goals already this year were a result of lost defensive zone face offs. At one point against Ottawa Spezza was 10 -0 on draws
