, was left bloodied on the ice late in the third period after blocking a shot by Canucks forward Elias Pettersson. The Canucks were down 4-2 at the time and were looking to bring the game closer with an extra attacker.
“I can only imagine if that was LeBron James, his head was bleeding and they let the other team take a three-pointer to tie the game,” MacKinnon told Sportsnet’s Scott Oake after the game. “I know it’s not the ref’s fault, it’s the league rule, but I think you need to look and who’s laying on the ice.”
What surprises me is the GM'S change so many rules in the summer why haven't they looked at rule 8. They didn't even scrap the ice after Calvert left, blood on the ice is dangerous. This has happened twice in a few weeks to the AVS. One being Zadorov and the other Calvert
FriedgeHNIC The call followed the rules unless all that blood was visible to a ref at a distance following the other action or was all over the ice surface. If you change the rules as now written you run the risk of teams attempting 'an icing' by having 'an injury.' So it's a choice.
ridiculous that this is “ok” by the NHL. Stop ignoring the issue and take action to protect your players
Blow the fricken whistle . You could see even Vancouver was worried about Calvert . Like stop the game this guy is hurting ! Smh 🤦♂️! Unreal !
Horrible
It was a facial injury, not the head. He was wearing a helmet so the puck didn’t hit his head.
He’s got a good point. Whistle should have gone. Bullshit.
There is so much play acting and faking injury in sport now in order to gain advantage the officials are in a no win spot. It is dangerous right now rulechanges
I sure remember a game where Bonino caught a glancing shot of the side of his helmet and appeared completely fine but the play was called. I can’t quite put my finger on why the whistle was blown. /s
Very very bad rule. Discretion Ref? 2 of you on the ice? Use YOUR heads sometimes and make the call. Someone has to get hurt of course till the rules change or common sense prevails. Every ref in every sport has a pocket rule surely. Common sense dictates. Disappointed.
NBA is a player’s league and the better for it. NHL not so much.
That officiating crew should be suspended indefinitely. Absolutely no question. They should be ashamed of themselves
Comparing Matt Calvert to Lebron James is a bit of a reach lol
FriedgeHNIC Canucks went through exact scenario with Sautner
🤬😳😢
Well said by the league's MVP
The refs gifted the Canucks a point.
FriedgeHNIC No question the play should’ve been blown dead.
avsgrl19 Can we also revisit another aspect that’s not been talked about? There must be some rule about cleaning up blood as a health hazard. It’s been done in all games I have seen. Not apparently in Vancouver. Maybe the league should deal with that little problem?
MacKinnon seems a bit confused as LeBron James does not play hockey, nor does hockey allow ‘three-pointers’. Unfortunate Calvert was hurt, but the rule was observed. Doubt Nathan would complain if it had gone the other way.
Because players fake injuries to stop the clock
I just for once am lost for words. What, Calvert wasn’t bleeding hard enough for them? He made the “mistake” of trying to get up. Like it’s absolute horse shit! The nhl can fuck off with any excuses they will come up with for what happened.
Welcome to Betmans league
The problem is how inconsistent the referees are in this. Blood from head should be immediate whistle. But the NHL and NHLPlayerSafety could care less about actual player safety.
Nobody knew it was ahead injury until after the multiple replays.
An embarrassment to hockey the way injured players are treated. If there is fear of ‘faking’ it make the penalty for doing so severe...a double minor or even a major. This happens at all levels of hockey and in an era of player safety needs to be addressed nhl HockeyCanada
Compare anything with the NBA to the NHL is a joke. NBA toughness, grit or team effort will never come close to the NHL.!
FriedgeHNIC Sportsnet?are you still around?
NHL A rule change is needed to bettet protect the players. A referee should have the power to blow the play dead when they feel the injury could be deemed serious. A goal versus possibly a life isn't worth it.
Gatorade and Nike care not about Matt Calvert
Bad refs last night. Everywhere.
FriedgeHNIC This is another example of the bush league officiating in the NHL. Just wait until the playoffs start to see just how bad it gets.
kylekeefetv Even Elias Petterson is like “hey refs blow the whistle” the whole play after that he keeps looking down at Calvert waiting for a whistle.
FriedgeHNIC Shame on the refs
FriedgeHNIC
LeBron gonna wake up and see his name mentioned with matt culvert and think oh god some new MAGA guy is coming after me
FriedgeHNIC I mean it kind of happened 🤔😑😵
FriedgeHNIC
Well after he said it I did spend some time imagining LeBron lying on the ice while Vancouver tried to score a three pointer by shooting a basketball from the blue line. He’s right, would never happen!
FriedgeHNIC Ben bishop and Stars in playoffs?
Injuries are apart of the game. MacKinnon is a true leader, “we have to battle through..” True ❤️ heart and soul 👍
kylekeefetv What a joke
Thanks to magic johnson(HIV), the nba has a rule that if any player is bleeding they have to get off the court.
FriedgeHNIC I think it was handled properly. What did the few extra seconds hurt Calvert? He wasn't bleeding out or convulsing/unconcious etc.
I’m
FriedgeHNIC Maybe don’t start your argument on the situation by comparing Matt Calvert to LeBron James, or by comparing the NHL to the NBA in any fashion... lol
terrible , hope he is ok, thoughts to all.
FriedgeHNIC EJ would not like Jack Edwards...then again who does?
Jeez I was complaining about the devils vs habs but this is just horrible. We keep saying referees can make mistakes they are human beings... Well not in this case, just plain robots. badjudgement
If refs start blowing the play dead every time a player drops down injured, certain players will start dropping like flies and this will be taken advantage of. Everyone knows it. Gotta feel bad for Calvert on this one tho.
The play should have been blown dead. Pettersson was concerned as soon as he hit him. That alone should have been enough. -Beav
FriedgeHNIC Never mind Elliot we need all the help we can get 😉
NHLSabresNews If a player is seriously hurt like this a blast to the head and or face. Blow the play dead. You have no idea how hurt a player is and its just in poor taste to play on when a player is in a bad place.
Ask Ben Bishop in Game 6 against the Blues during the playoffs.
Under the current rules I agree with what the refs did but the rule needs to be changed especially if someone is hit in the head with a puck or is still in the “danger” zone. I agree with letting play continue if the injured player is not in the area of play.
How much do the Avalanche have to sacrifice to gain recognition? The players union needs to really step into this one. Calvert was hurt.. badly.
FriedgeHNIC Honestly I’d kind of be wondering what the hell labron is doing out there on the ice
Hockey ain’t basketball n thank god for that
FriedgeHNIC This makes no sense. Is he really suggesting the didn’t blow the whistle because Calvert isn’t a star?
Blood? In the NBA? He could’ve just said “I can only imagine if that was me bleeding on the ice...”
ChangeRule8
NHL and these refs are a fucking joke.
If any player takes a puck to the head play should stop.
