Liberals exploring proposed $2 billion tunnel to link Newfoundland to mainland

It would take 15 years to construct and would not actually cut travel times

The notion of connecting Newfoundland to the mainland with some type of fixed link is a long-running idea. The last major study of the project was done by the provincial government in 2004 and then updated in 2018.“We need to do a feasibility study. We need to look at the economics of the project. We need to look at the rationale for the project,” she said. “My focus has always been how do you have infrastructure projects that improve the quality of life for people, but also grow the economy and create jobs.”

They didn’t say who would pay for the study or what the estimated cost could be.The province’s report estimated the fixed link could take 60 per cent of the traffic from the Gulf Ferry.NDP MP Jack Harris, the only opposition MP on the island, said it’s worth exploring the idea, but he is skeptical.

Harris said even if the project makes economic sense, the long time frame for construction means it is not a practical solution to problems Newfoundlanders are facing now.

I agree with this project. Way overdue. I have included it in my 50 Trillion Rebuild Canada Investment program of my personal agenda. Well that would help solve their unemployment since all oil and gas sector jobs gone. Idiots SNC Lavalin gets the contract and goes slightly over budget coming in at $20 billion. And they laughed........

That’s a priority right now!!! Oh the cabal loves their tunnels.... Meanwhile how many in Northern Canada don’t have drinking water and adequate housing.....🤔 🤣🤣🤣 a 200 kilometer tunnel? sounds like a brilliant idea! WTF I Never knew a lib who didn’t enjoy a good ferry ride Knowing the Liberal track record on wasting money, they will hire the Muskrat Falls team to manage the project.

I heard it would cost 6B Sounds like a campaign song to me, sponsored by the taxpayers. How about Liberals get clean drinking water to indigenous people and get homeless veterans off the streets before such ridiculous vanity projects are considered!

Brent Suter, Milwaukee Brewers avoid arbitration, reach two-year, $2.5M deal - TSN.caMilwaukee Brewers left-hander Brent Suter reached a two-year, $2.5 million deal Sunday that avoids an arbitration hearing that had been set for next week. Who?

Teck 15 Billion dollars and will employ 7500 people... Liberals want to spend 2 Billion for nonsensical infrastructure project that will continue to eat tax dollars. if only they had a device you could put dozens of vehicles on at a time to use More like 5 billón + Taking care of his immigrant support IF this were a battle, or a game of chess, it would be KNOWN as a feint... 🥳

I founded out heh a video of Skippy and his gang trying to solve this! This was May la! She does not likes the energies! Must be something in the water supply that triggers such irrational ideas SNC-Lavalin will get the engineering contract, the new cement factory in Quebec will build this legacy project and the ROC will always refer to it as Trudeau’s Deep, Dark Hole...

Who is crazy enough to think that this will really cost 2 Billion? If you believe this your NUTS! Sounds a lot like a pipeline for cars

Newfoundland and Labrador premier Dwight Ball announces resignationThe premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, Dwight Ball, has announced that he is stepping down to spend more time with his family. There’s usually more to come when someone steps aside “ to spend more time with family”. Shouldn't take long for the truth to leak. He didn’t know he had a family before the election?

Nothing gets the rabble worked up like a proposal by the federal government. but our paris agreements ... no building things in canada thats not allowed ... Going to pay for it with unicorn farts and magic fairy dust. I can think of better locations for tunnels right now. Fantastic. Money well spent. If they say it will cost 2 billion then it will be more like 4 billion dollars!

$2B my ass. With all this spending... why is JustinTrudeau still fighting our military veterans and indigenous children in court? I guess political and legal expediency is only for corrupted Liberal supporters Guaranteed re-election A pipeline carrying cars? They’d better protest that too.

Who?

Forget it Who gets the repeated 'study money'? That is why ideas like this usually keep coming back. Follow the money on this one. It would cost ten times that for a population of what? Half a million? This idea is just bonkers. The Chunnel is a lot longer, 50kms vs 18kms, in todays $ it would have cost over $60B Cdn.. It averages 60,000 passengers, 4,600 trucks, 140 coaches and 7,300 cars a day. No way this can be built for $2B, further more it's Catherine McKenna's portfolio and it is not needed.

Where is the NPV calculation? What it really is, is an excuse to pump a shitload of engineering work into SNCL. It would make supply-chain logistics for Nfld companies much more reliable and cost-effective. It would also mean increased access to markets in North America, which would be a needed boost for the Nfld economy. More opportunity for Nfld is good for Canada.

'It would take 15 years to construct and would not actually cut travel times or significantly reduce costs to transport goods' Then what's the point? Are they kidding? I thought they didn't want any pipelines?

China sees rise in new virus cases, death toll rises by 105Mainland China on Monday reported a slight upturn in new virus cases and an increase by 105 in deaths caused by the illness for a total of 1,770 since the outbreak began. This is just another reason to stop dealing with China!

Imagine the cost in terms of fossil fuels. Untold tonnes of CO2 used in blasting / hauling / moving rock. I would say most Newfies would say invest the two billion into Alberta because they all have families and friends working or living there. This is large infrastructure. Every province will have an opinion and weigh in.

And pay for it with what? FFS... the liberal consultation process alone would take 15 years and well over $2 billion. Trudeau and liberals have ensured that Canada will never see another large scale engineering project such as this. So is that sort of like a pipeline? I thought the Liberals were sworn enemies of pipelines ....

$2 billion over 15 years, 16Km long that is $111m per Km. The Chunnel built in todays cost is $425 million per Km. (50km long). If CA is same design as Chunnel $7.65B, half as fancy about $3.8B in present dollars. FYI- Chunnel took 6 years not 15 for 50Km, at 80% over est cost 2 billion= 10 billion... can you say déjà vu?

April fools! Who is paying and how will, they cost recover.

We don't want it. Invest the money in underwater cables for the lower churchill & reverse the upper churchill quebec deal. Or oil & gas. Good idea Food and services will get cheaper. And how are houngo8ng to get your money back, tolls tools tolls. Liberals should not explore Canada .. anything they approve is sure to be a failure 😖 LiberalismIsAMentalDisease

Liberals LOVE giving money to consultants - check the registration roles to see how much of it goes to campaign staffers It's called building political capital or buying votes? I guess the Zipline plan didn’t make the shortlist. There is no appetite in Newfoundland for another boondoggle. Don't waste your money studying it. If it came back positive no one would believe it.

sounds like an interesting idea

Alstom to acquire Bombardier Transportation for $8.2 billionBombardier has confirmed Alstom will acquire Bombardier Transportation for an enterprise value of $8.2 billion. City Halls everywhere have already approved the new contracts for more shitty trains too wow wouldya look at that wink wink I wonder what percentage of the 8.2B will be given back to the taxpayer, for all those years of funding they received from the federal and provincial governments. How about all that bailout money

Wrong. HighvSpeed rail in Ontario first Built by SNC Lavaline. Sure thing. This government is broke it's time to cut spending!!!! He is truly out of his mind !!! seems like a dumb make work project, you would have to drive 29 hrs north of Quebec City to the tunnel point, and then all the way south in NF. I don’t think NF has rail service, so that and roads are needed. Keep the ferry svc.

I think they missed a few zeros in the headline more liberal stupidity Sooooo 10 billion dollars then GO 4 er Feds exploring link from remote fishing village to remote northern mining community.

Not in reality Wow that’s less than 1/2 of the cost they paid for the Old TMX.... could build one to Vancouver island too at that price... some how it all doesn’t add up or make sense for the future.. EVs would reduce CO2 emissions in tunnel though! Pile on the debt. Once upon a time (late 1970s) when I was employed by the federal Treasury Board I was part of a multi departmental team that assessed the business case for such a tunnel under the Strait of Belle Isle Our conclusion was that it is uneconomical/ unjustifiable. Probably still is!

Only $2 billion? The Saskatchewan government spent $1.5 billion putting a road around Regina on completely flat land! The tunnel seems like a bargain! ☺ Can't do that, would never be approved by the radical left and Climate Change Cult that the Liberals have ceded power to in Canada. The plans and payoffs to Liberal companies would cost 2 billion alone, so 2 billion in profit to 'study it' to Liberal friends?

Pure insanity. Join it to Labrador? Then what? Where's the value here? Jesus; who keeps coming up with nonsense like this when health care is coming unravelled, infrastructure is failing, military is using junk equipment and veterans are getting screwed. This is just crazy. Is this what they talked about in the incident response meeting

Great idea. More infrastructure to blockade Dirty liberals. We don't need a tunnel we need a wall.

LMAO.... No way will that quote be enough, I smell a Liberal boondoggle. No. FN H2O 1st. Perhaps explore this after we get Alberta people working, and the oilfields going OK? Will there be a 10 yr environmental review like there is for anything major built in Alberta. And what about the emissions? Would have to be zero if built in Alberta. AlbertaIndependence QueTakeoverofCanada CanadaIsEmpireOfQuebec LiberalPartyIsPartyOfQuebec FreeAlberta

Harper's feds clawed back $10 Billion from NL economy through offshore and equalization changes. Offered a $9Billion loan garantee for Muskrat Falls project - not an investment. Libs spend $5 Billion for a pipeline dream. Time to invest in the 10th province. Let’s get back to earth & deal with pipelines and railway blockades

Tunnels in Norway similar or longer are done for under $600m. The 'spin' on this is pretty obviously against Newfoundland and Labrador physicaly connecting to Canada 70 + years after Confederation. and just how exactly does this benefit Quebec Hey elonmusk...you busy that week? 😂

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t it only 17km from Labrador to NFLD? What a f*cking waste of money! Sure. (Look!....a squirrel!) Unbelievable nonsense The Confederation Bridge was built between 1993 & 1997 for $1 billion (maybe $1.5 billion in today’s dollars) ... I would have to be convinced but seems like opposition is because NL voted liberal and Conservatives hate Trudeau .. nothing about the pros & cons of the project ..

It would cost a lot more than that... I kinda like this idea Geezus. How about trying to repair health care instead with that money. The key sentence: “It would take 15 years to construct and would not actually cut travel times or significantly reduce costs to transport goods.” Save on snow removal costs. Pay for its self in one billion years.

They can’t even keep train tracks open Pipe dream. Will never happen unless you got at least 30 billion. JustinTrudeau is nuts. Why don’t you start fixing the country’s immediate problems first before thinking of anything else. This is not real must be a deflection. cdnpoli Now that, would be easy to blockade 🥴

Pay down the debt I’m sure FN’s will block that too if up to Liberals. More votes from the Maritimes. Sounds climate changey You can the total cost would exceed 2 billions because Morneau and the rest of the Libtards can not count. Word of caution, do not spend more than you make. What will newfoundlanders call this new tunnel idea? A boondoggle.

There will be a blockade
