Procurement Minister Jean-Yves Duclos says Ottawa has already started to convert other federal properties into modern housing projects, and will continue to do more

Canada News, Canada Headlines

Public Services and Procurement Canada minister Jean-Yves Duclos meets with construction workers at the site of an affordable housing unit managed by Ottawa Community Housing in the Thornecliffe Park region of Ottawa, on Sept. 28.Procurement Minister Jean-Yves Duclos says the Liberals see turning federal assets into affordable housing as an integral part of fixing Canada’s shortage.

The procurement minister cited a $200-million fund that the government launched through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. in 2018 to develop or renovate federal assets into affordable, accessible and socially inclusive housing. During a tour of the Mikinàk development construction site, Duclos lauded the project as “an example of a federal land being transformed into community housing.”

The housing hub is expected to feature around 5,300 units in total – 2,000 of which are to be affordable – as well as 10 public parks and three schools, with a completion date between 2029 and 2031.
