Our readers weigh in on the firing of 'revered and reviled' hockey icon Don Cherry

Readers have flooded our Letters to the Editor inbox with their thoughts and reaction to the firing on Nov. 11 of controversial hockey icon Don Cherry, once named the seventh greatest Canadian in history. Cherry was fired two days after he delivered a confusing rant about poppies and newcomers on his Coach’s Corner segment of Hockey Night In Canada. Here are the letters from the National Post’s Letters page.Don Cherry has never been known for eloquence, tact or diplomacy in his remarks.

While his comments were not distinguished, I don’t think Cherry is incorrect in asserting that all Canadians, no matter how new, or how established should wear a poppy to both encourage self-reflection, and to give thanks for the freedoms provided to us. Remembrance of the sacrifice of others is an integral part of our civic duty, which all us should take part in.

Given his unabashed loyalty to the military, the answer seems obvious: auction them off with the proceeds going to the Royal Canadian Legion, the organization committed to making a difference in the lives of veterans and their families, and dedicated to remembering the men and women who sacrificed for this country. While commentators all around Canada rejoice about Don Cherry’s removal from the air, here, in my French-speaking environment, the sentiment is not the same.

Why is calling immigrants 'you people' any less acceptable than the many unnameable things he said about 'Frenchies'

He’s not a racist he speak the truth and it cost him his job I wish he would get his job back Don u did a great job I miss you on Saturday night I miss ur colourful clothing you wear every Saturday night ur a very funny person when it comes to dress up

Liar

There was a better way for the station to handle this icons faux pas over wearing poppies. Shame on the social mob warriors who wouldn’t want to be fired over speaking up.

He's not a racist, just bigoted, intolerant and discriminatory...that's all...

True. Don Cherry is a Canadian icon. Don's heart is in the right place, he is not a racist. CoachsCornerDC Everyone needs to cancel sportsnet for what they did to Don.

When this type of commentary does not impact you, then you will NEVER see the racism it infers.

Spineless appeasers of CancelCulture covering their own their own asses. Folks on the show didn't react because they know the guy and know what was and was not saying. Make no mistake Resist them now or one day THEY will come for you too.

He said “you people come here”, implying immigrants

38 years of Hockey Night In Canada and this is how it ends? Fired on Remembrance Day. Will miss Don Cherry.

How is 'you people' racist? Cherry's comments may have been directed at immigrants but not at a particular race. He seemed to be inclusive in asking all newcomers, regardless of race, to respect Canadian heroes.

You all get mad at Don Cherry for something like this but are okay with BlackFaceTrudeau Big think moment

What I think is sad is that an 85 year old man, who genuinely loves hockey and his country, is fired on Remembrance Day for showing support (in a really messed up way) for our veterans and serving military. It’s like that Grandpa you never want to sit beside at Sunday dinner.

How do you tell Cherry that he is absolutely right. Just ask anyone who ever served.

Don Cherry is right the silent majority are with them, but they never say boo to a goose, how do you get the silent Majority to stop being silent and fight back. Tucker Carlson played the whole clip and Mr. Cherry didn't even single out immigrants, he was talking to everyone.

Only the assholes 'reviled'. Don Cherry to immigrants: 'Hey you guys should be wearing more poppies!' Sportsnet: 'That does it Mister! You're outta here! Your 40 yr career is over!!!' 🙄🗯and Ron Maclean 'understanding' it all...

No one is ever the villain in their own story.

Sure why not, let's tell people 'how' they should have an opinion. 'All you people' allowing yourselves to play the victim over an opinion need to come down of off your high hurt horse.

How is “ you people” now referring to people of color? Cherry was supporting Veterans, as he has always done! Immigrants who support the sacrifice and service of our Service men and woman, apparently Cherry was not referring to you!

hmm. maybe they should shut the fuck up

He's always know his hockey, but he's always been a troglodyte and after 40 yrs its time he goes.

He has a history of expressing xenophobic views, especially when it comes to who is a 'real' hockey player. Very dismissive of Europeans and Russians (and French Canadians for some reason).

Cancel culture horse shit

Pple say he was speaking about everyone wearing a poppy, but he didn't say that. He singled out newcomers. Inferring they are ungrateful. You will never meet a more grateful person than an immigrant. Born and raised Cnd's don't wear poppies and they should know better

Check the polls around the country. I was able to dig up 15 and every single one thought the firing was wrong. And by a significant margin. And I can only imagine the reception Ron MacLean will get now by hockey towns.

If you thought what he said was spicy you should have heard him during the Iraq war years.

At a young age being a racist equates to being ignorant at 85 years old being a racist equates to being stupid. Not seeing are calling out his racism in this case it don't only to ignore your own.

Just because it was offensive or divisive doesn't mean it was wrong.

Maybe SN could get a woman to host Coach's Corner. I hear the CWHL and NWHL are real ratings juggernauts and their players almost make minimum wage.

Let's be honest...nobody tunes in to Coach's Corner expecting Don Cherry to celebrate diversity, promote a liberal worldview or speak out against microaggressions. Who'd watch that? How would that benefit anyone?

I honestly don't think he's racist. He's an idiot for sure but I don't see that being a part of who he is. He shot his mouth off and stubbornly dug in when called on it. He likes to shoot off his mouth and this time it cost him his job. That's the way it goes.

If the network is overcome with political correctness why is Huawei a hockey sponsor?

ok boomer
