What British Columbians need is competence

last May. And Toronto has spent decades talking transit plans to death at vast expense, even with bankrolls pledged by the province and federal governments. Last July Mayor John Tory announced a remake of the city’s historic Union Station rail hub was finally complete, more than a decade after it was launched and $200 million more costly than expected. Tory’s declaration was quickly followed by the revelation there’s actually much more building to be done.

The reasons governments at all levels have trouble getting anything built are no secret. They are so predictable and repetitive, in fact, it’s a wonder politicians continually fail to prepare for them. A recent New York Timescited an Oxford University study that figured 92 per cent of public projects around the world come in late and over budget.

B.C. residents can only hope. They’ve had their prime ministerial visit and their promise of funds. Now what they really need is a sustained display of competence.
