ICYMI - IvisonJ: Why are travellers from abroad still landing at Canada's airports during COVID-19 lockdown?

The age of international air travel has quickly become the symbol of a bygone era, like steam locomotion or cash.

Yet travelling by air is still a thing. While the volume of travellers is down more than 90 per cent on last year in the seven weeks to May 19, there were still 269,501 arrivals at the four Canadian airports open to international travel . It is likely many are Canadians who were overseas and are only now returning home. Air Canada said it has operated a number of special flights for the government of Canada, repatriating 6,600 citizens and permanent residents. WestJet has also operated special flights.

Travel now accounts for 20 per cent of all cases, according to the Public Health Agency, but that will surely rise as trans-border travel returns. Airlines are already planning to increase the frequency on their international routes. Lufthansa has announced it will resume more regular service between Frankfurt and Toronto starting in June.

IvisonJ And now there's the big push to wear face masks which in truth is just another means of pushing more of the blame on us when things go south the next time around / Re: travelling, It seems that the same rules don't apply to every one.

IvisonJ Misinformation needs to be corrected.

IvisonJ I understand that they are Canadians returning home.

IvisonJ Can’t help wonder what if we and other countries simply closed are borders to all travellers when all this started...

IvisonJ People coming from outside Canada should show proof of where they will quarantine, be provided with transport & have someone checking to ensure they are complying. Any of this happening?

IvisonJ When a travel restriction is not a travel restriction. If they are all isolating(doubtful) it’s ok I guess.

IvisonJ Are they Canadians? Perhaps? Do they have valid reasons? Go interview them. You know journalism 101. Report back.
