Fall is the time to get my burrow ready for hibernation. This involves getting rid of stuff more than cleaning, writes columnist Janice Wells.

Grandson Miles doesn't need toys when he can take the cushions off the couch.

Maybe having a Toronto Blue Jays doubleheader on in the background is just the inspiration columnist Janice Wells needs to finish her fall cleaning. Contributed photo - Contributed photoWe know our roles in this household; spring is the time for me to go away for a few days, so Newman can clean; fall is the time for Newman to stay out of my way, while I try to get rid of stuff that has either made its way into the house since last fall or has failed to prove its worth or please me in any way.

Yesterday, the project was to round up the grandkids’ toys for the ‘donation, garbage, keep’ exercise. This came close to liberating the sunroom, which is a good thing and a bad thing. It’s also where the kids play because it keeps them out of the living room and getting it ready for me to enjoy in the fall means getting the toys out of sight, which was impossible before I culled them so this is a good thing.

But, undaunted I turn my attention to my study. This is the room where my computer, books and painting supplies live, along with the kids’ art and craft supplies. There’s a comfy love seat and a little TV and is my equivalent to Newman’s lair in the basement.
