OPINION: Behind closed doors, hidden from public and government scrutiny, thousands of mink are living in miserable conditions where they are raised for their fur.

Recent outbreaks of COVID-19 on large mink farms in the Netherlands have called attention to another reason for alarm. Workers who were infected with COVID-19 spread the infection to mink on the farm. The virus then spread like wildfire among the mink and, in turn, infected other workers.

Aware of the risks posed by COVID-19, the British Columbia Ministry of Agriculture has alerted mink farmers and advised them to implement heightened infection prevention and control measures. But the Ministry has not carried out any inspections on any of the province’s 13 mink farms since at least 2018. Relying on the industry to self-regulate and not having government or third-party inspections jeopardizes both animal welfare and public health safety.

Public health is most effective with preventive interventions — not trying to fix a disaster. The varying epidemics of COVID-19 are a perfect illustration of this.
