Hit streaming series ‘Euphoria’ is back on HBO for a second season and we asked teens if the show is a realistic reflection of life as a high schooler today.

WARNING: This story discusses substance use, sex, violence, and other sensitive topics.

So just how realistic is “Euphoria” compared to modern high schoolers’ experiences? We asked the experts themselves: high school students and recent graduates.Emily Clarizio, a recent high school graduate, said she’s grateful to finally have a show that depicts what teens are going through these days, even though the plot is sometimes exaggerated.“There are different struggles between our generation and our parents’ generation,” she said. “You can’t really compare them.

When asked why she thinks people are turning to substances at such a young age, Clarizio said it helps young people express themselves, self-medicate and try to cope with mental health problems. Nearly 15 per cent of teens reported binge drinking in the month before the CAMH survey, and 11 per cent reported using prescription opioid pain relievers — something the show’s narrator, Rue, played by Zendaya, frequently turns to.Sonia Haba, a 16-year-old living in Mississauga, referred to an adage people from every generation can relate to: parents don’t understand what it’s like to be a teen.
