First Nations and Metis leaders say they need more from Ottawa to combat COVID-19 in their communities, including money, assistance with security and help acquiring protective equipment.

Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde says money earmarked for First Nations for COVID-19 response so far is not proportional to the populations in their communities and more financial help will be needed.

He is calling on Ottawa to immediately make available 10 per cent of the future funding that will be allocated to Indigenous COVID-19 response to help First Nations deal with the health and social impacts of the pandemic. Bellegarde also says First Nations must be part of all decision-making when it comes to deciding how resources are allocated -- something he says is not happening now.

Chief Ghislain Picard from the Assembly of First Nations' Quebec-Labrador branch said Quebec First Nations also need more protective gear and also have concerns about public safety in the midst of the pandemic.

Phil Fontaine was a chief. He worked with the govt and successfully rallied the govt when it deemed. We haven’t seen you in a month and then you pop up to blame his lack of leadership on the feds? You should be consulting the people. You never do that. Why? Our elders are dying

All these people do is complain or protest. Shut up!

Contribute to canadian society instead of just taking.

Go and buy some. Endlessly playing the victim card while receiving billions from the real taxpayers. I'm really sick of this show.

Not long ago, some of these folks were blocking rail lines. Which, among other things, caused hundreds of folks to be temporarily laid off from their jobs (Via Rail). Now they’re asking for help. 🤔 (these are factual, not racist driven statements).

I don't want to sound mean, are they not the nation that keep telling the rest of us to leave them alone?

Aren’t they already self isolated from the rest of normal society anyway

This just in: Indigenous leaders call for more assistance as summer is fast approaching, which is the optimal beer and whiskey drinking season. 24s, 40s or cash will be accepted.

After what our Ancestors did by stealing their land sending them Small Pox. Canada Better help the first nation to be here.

The traditional ones though, made from rabbit pelts, eagle feathers and poplar saplings.

Go buy it, the feds give you enough money.

How about paying taxes like the rest of us, before you hold your hand out?I’m getting sick of acting like a nanny to these people. True equality is suffering like the rest of us. stand on tracks and disrupt our economy, than a month later hold your hand out asking for money?!!!

it was all on the trains you stopped, now piss off indian.

The indians claim to be the 'first nation'. If they are a nation then they should figure out how to deal with this like the real nations.

Pay taxes..

Of course!

Legitimate question. Why do Indigenous communities say they are their own nations, and then look for handout from ours? Are you you one, the other or both?

Maybe with all the money we give them every year, they could go buy some!!

Drop dead perrybellegarde

Put up a blockade.

I disagree to redirect more aid to indigenous communities. According to the INAC, they have received $215 billion dollars of hardworking Canadian tax payers money for the past 60 years. When will it be enough is enough? It almost feels like self-sacrificing. cdnpoli

As for going forward with a percentage for future fund does that mean that it will come out of First Nations pocket first in the future. Interesting essence perry. I haven’t heard of exclusion and it seems everywhere is struggling a stuggling for supplies. Why separate everyone.

In conufused in why all decisions have to go through or include First Nations. Does this go both ways on decision making. Does the government have the same when fb makes desision. Just trying to educate.

Not much sympathy.why would people be not willing to give you all there money?

If we had true equality we would not be having this conversation 🤫

Your people used all your masks hiding their faces while committing crimes at railway crossings.

Why would you take 10% of future funding when you don't even make up 5% of the population? I will be honest I haven't heard the break down on aboriginal cases of Covid for about a week, but at that time it was zero.

They're already isolated. They certaily dont need anything more than any other canadian citizen

It is all about money. Where is the money from to buy PPE if there is no oil production and shipment? Is that a simple logic!

Jesus Perry, you haven’t done anything. You don’t get to make the political play of passing the buck to the feds every time you fuck up? Take some accountability. You haven’t been speaking to the people. You had no plan in place to look after our elders. You’re a failure.

Deliver it by rail

But they’ll take cash in lieu.

Imagine that!!!

Opinion: History will repeat itself if First Nations remain underfunded in the fight against COVID-19By allocating less than 1 per cent of its pandemic funding to First Nations, the federal government is creating second-class communities GlobeDebate First Nations are underfunded for NOTHING !!!! maybe they should save some of the billions of tax dollars we gave them!! What a f*cked up system !! GlobeDebate Didn't they just get another $50M for the federal government That came in addition to existing Fed and Prov funding AND the $100s of millions a year in royalties from resource companies. That's a LOT of $$$ per person. Mismanaged, not accountable, etc would make more sense... GlobeDebate Thought they were their own nation?

One-in-six Albertans could contract COVID-19, new projections showKenney will speak at 6 p.m. on 'what could be some very challenging numbers' in terms of the damage the virus could still do, he said Monday. Is he nuts. I think he’s lost his mind. Way to put more fear into people who are already suffering for anxiety and about to go insane. Mental health is going to be bigger challenge then the coronavirus. Or.... 5 out of 6 won’t get it 😃 All these groups making bullshit predictions that are proven to be way off should have to pay a fine. The amount of unnecessary panic and stress, lost stock value, small business loss etc. will be through the roof.
