This year’s Oscars will take place on Feb. 9, the earliest date ever in the ceremony’s 92-year history. But for anyone looking for a change in the makeup of nominees from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, that just means we can get this one over with sooner, and look forward to next year.
The picture is even more dire for women filmmakers, with Greta Gerwig as the sole female director nominated for Best Picture , and one of only two women in the screenwriting categories; Krysty Wilson-Cairns shares a nomination with Sam Mendes for 1917. Other heavy-hitters include Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit with six nominations including Best Picture; and Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story with six, including acting nominations for supporting actress Laura Dern and lead performers Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson.
Then again, nominations don’t guarantee anything on the big night. Netflix went into the recent Golden Globes with 34 nominations, only to walk away almost empty-handed after Dern was the only winner, for Marriage Story.
