Weather specialist Allister Aalders has the latest on hurricane Fiona and the impacts the storm will bring to Atlantic Canada this weekend.

Most of New Brunswick, southwest Nova Scotia and eastern Newfoundland are expected to escape the worst of Fiona’s wrath.

There’s still some wiggle room to monitor with Fiona’s track, but it’s expected the centre of the powerful storm will land somewhere between Guysborough and Cape Breton counties in Nova Scotia. As Fiona approaches, the hurricane will become post-tropical but is still expected to carry the characteristics of a weakening category 2 hurricane or strong category 1.Conditions will begin to deteriorate through Friday night into Saturday morning as the storm approaches and crosses the region.

Peak wind gusts of 120 to 150 km/h remain forecast for Cape Breton, Prince Edward Island, the Northumberland and eastern shores of Mainland Nova Scotia and southwest Newfoundland, mainly near Port Aux Basques. Exposed coastlines in those areas, especially in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, may see localized gusts of 150 to 170 km/h.

The locations at greatest risk of 100 to 150-plus mm of rain remain the north and eastern shores of Nova Scotia, Cape Breton, eastern Prince Edward Island and the southwest coast of Newfoundland. Fifty 100-plus is likely for western P.E.I., into central Nova Scotia, including Halifax and Newfoundland's west and south coasts.Otherwise, this will not be a major rain event for the rest of Newfoundland, New Brunswick and the southwest corner of Nova Scotia.
