The Hamilton Police Service declined to comment on the case, saying only that some of the stolen funds were still outstanding, and that it views it “important to keep the details out of the public domain to locate the rest.” It did not offer explanations for that reasoning, or why the case was only recently disclosed.
The teen was arrested for theft and possession of stolen property over $5,000. The international case spans multiple agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and, according to Hamilton police, is the biggest theft in cryptocurrency from a single person. The alleged victim is an entrepreneur and investor based in California named Josh Jones, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, which helped in the case. An early investor in bitcoin, Jones has had hands in web hosting, aviation and animation. A podcast describes him as the “richest, goofiest, most confident yet normal-seeming person who was a Bitcoin pioneer.” He did not respond to a request for comment.
Of the $46 million in coins that Hamilton police have said was stolen, its press release last week said only $7 million has been recovered.
