What does it take to stand out amongst hundreds of thousands of birds in one of the planet’s most remote places? A call like no other.

The tiny island measuring a mere 1.5 kilomtres in diameter, is made up of lava flows and produces geothermal heat keeping it ice-free in many places. And, its home to perhaps the most devoted parents in the animal kingdom. Adélie penguins have chosen it time and time again – returning to this particular nesting spot for thousands of years .

The Adélie penguin got its name from the French Antarctic explorer, Jules Dumont d’Urville. Upon discovering these sea birds in 1840, he named them after his wife, Adéle. Living up to 20 years, Sporting a ‘tuxedo’ look Adélie penguins have a black back and head, white chest and belly and white rings around the eye. Male and female Adélies are similar in size with similar features, making them are very hard to tell apart.

Adélies are far-ranging travellers but also capable walkers that often cover long overland distances. Unable to fly, they spend much of their life on their feet, traversing an average of 13,000 km a year between foraging and breeding grounds.
