There's basically no competition for the RAV4 Hybrid, and it shows in the SUV's sales. Here's why.

That’s not an insignificant number for at least two reasons.

Canadians haven’t been the most ardent early adopters of electrified technology. The hybrid market was kickstarted at the tail end of the 20th century with the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius. Yet when Prius sales were peaking in the United States in 2007, in a market that was 10 times the size of Canada’s, Prius volume was 70 times stronger in the U.S.

Have Toyota’s rivals missed the boat? After all, it’s not just that the RAV4 Hybrid is popular “for a hybrid.” The RAV4 Hybrid doesn’t merely add incremental volume. It’s not just a pie-in-the-sky experiment for Toyota Canada to judge future market potential. It’s actually genuinely popular. At 8.2 L/100 km in mixed driving, the Forester basically matches the two top-selling Canadian-built crossovers: RAV4 and CR-V . Prior to 2019’s decline, Forester popularity reached a Canadian peak at 14,248 sales in 2018.

Undersized in comparison to the CR-V and RAV4, the Sportage is also let down by its thirst. At best, an AWD Sportage is rated at 10 L/100km in mixed driving — Natural Resources Canada says that will work out to nearly $500 more in annual fuel costs than a RAV4; $1,000 more than the RAV4 Hybrid. Jeep Compass: 7,652, down 19 percentFollowing the discontinuation of the Jeep Patriot and the consolidation of Jeep’s compact efforts into the second-generation Compass, sales shot northward. 2018 volume, for example, was up 118 per cent compared with 2016.
