The motion would largely amount to a symbolic gesture, but an important one as private sector and low\u002Dincome workers bear the brunt of COVID\u0027s economic fallout

Members of both the House of Commons and Senate receive automatic pay raises equal to inflation every year. MPs make annual salaries of $182,600, not including additional payments for special positions like prime minister or opposition leader. Senators make a base salary of $157,600.

“For people who hold public office, when you see people struggling around you it is hard to see, it’s hard to wrap your head around,” Moncion said. “We keep hearing all the time that we’re all in this together,” he said. “Well, not really if the government isn’t making any sacrifices while other people are losing their businesses and losing their jobs.”Article content continuedGovernment leaders in a number of other countries have already cut their own salaries, often by more sizeable amounts than those recommended in the Moncion motion.

Gee count me in. Governments screw Canadians and get a huge pensions on their visions not ours! Hey Canadians we can make a huge positive difference. But we all need to stand up and fight for our freedom. Big government less freedom for us!!! Take back your control!

So yet again only the privately wealthy can afford to govern. It’s a revenue problem!

Yes!

Better yet, set the wage of ALL public representatives to the average income of those who they represent. Maybe then politicians would be incentivised to raise the living standards of Canadians instead of increasing their tax base through importing foreigners.

Totally they already gave themselves raises when covid first hit.

Tell that to the Vancouver City staff...didn’t they just have a pay increase last week?

It's good days to be part of the REGIME!!

unspinthespin Nah not good enough. Follow other jurisdictions like New Zealand and take a 20% pay cut. Trimming the public payroll has to be in the plans to tackle the massive deficits. It can’t all be on the taxpayer

unspinthespin Big pay cut would concentrate the minds quicker

unspinthespin Maybe they should lay of 25% of them.

Freeze? Cut their wages by 50%

Good idea.

Government workers are sailing through this pandemic virtually unscathed while those who pay their salaries are suffering. millions have lost jobs, but not the sacred government workers. Why gave none been laid off? We are definitely NOT in this together.

Cut their pay to a third.

Shouldn’t even be a second thought..”we’re all in this together”...right?

I say all fed politicians need a 20 percent pay cut

darcybulitz Lol ya they’ll vote to give themselves a wage freeze. We have a better chance of seeing hell freeze

pay cuts just like all the ordinary citizens would be the right thing to do

Pension reform as well, all employees with less the X years in the plan need to be converted to match program, no more indexing either.

It makes sense for our leaders to get rich ONLY if everybody else is getting rich too. The same goes for our banks, btw!

Yhey should all get a 10% cut.

Surely it’s time to reduce the size of government entirely. The economy is in ruin and it it take a decade to recover if responsible meassures are taken.

Peopel should really protest about these politicians. They leach onto tax payers during a really bad time.

Every politician and public sector employee should take pay cuts.

They just had a big raise which was not in the Canadian taxpayers money budget!

Freeze? There should be a decline in pay that matches the decline in GDP. This will force them to think long and hard before imposing lockdowns

We should be cutting government workers wages as well! PierrePoilievre liberal_party NDP CanadianGreens

Leveling the playing field. Sharing the motivation.

How about they take a 10% pay cut like my husband had to.

This is very little step, with no impact on the budget deficit. They should propose 25% cuts on all federal employees and politicians except the first responders and CAF!

They should take a pay cut those croooks

Freeze? Cut...

Why is this even a suggestion; it should be a given.

We should layoff all of the Senate as they obviously are not an essential service and are highly overpaid for the 'work' that they claim to do. cdnpoli

Lockdown again and force them to survive on CERB

Freeze? How about lower them to the median income of all Canadians? All politicians too, not just federal. Oh, and bureaucrats too.

Why not just tax Amazon?

Great idea! If one sacrifices- we all sacrifice. Remember, Tham, Hajdu and Trudeau say : “We are ALL in this together”.

Freeze not enough, all government employees from Prime Minister to a washroom cleaner should be forced to work for free till economy recovers.

You misspelled “symbolic” gesture.. it’s spelled “e-m-p-t-y” gesture...

Cut wages not freeze!

Every politician and health official should take a 50 percent pay cut while restrictions are in place. For all government employees Defined benefit pensions should be replaced with a 5 % matching defined contribution plan. Time to defund the gravy train.

Halifax's mayor didn't wait to cut his own salary. It is time to re-examine all of the top salaries in govt and govt funded organizations. However, general govt employees are not getting rich and they are doing all the work.

25 % cut and a freeze on increases works for me.

I think many at all corners of the political spectrum think some trims to govt salaries is appropriate. However, many average govt employees are still just working hard for their pay. It is the top level of politicians, bureaucrats and administrators that could use a haircut.

This is a no-brainer

What a great idea, give this person a raise!

I think all wages of public employees should be cut until government gets their finances back on track. Wow, that would sure smarten up Trudeau and Freeland in a hurry

Lower wages of federal and provincial politicians

Thats definitely a good idea. All politicians should get a pay cut including the provincial Premiers etc.

Not just politicians, but federal employees too.

I have been calling out for reforming govt for many years Sep/20 - Public Sector/Comp -

Finally... a compassionate politician!

Little late no,

Try a 20% reduction along with a freeze and you are then starting to make sense. Currently their wages are too high compared the average worker who IS NOT working at this time. You then start to get a sense of reality.

Can the country still function without a Senate.....how much would that save taxpayers? Cheers

I don't see any other option. Don't be like Metrolinx, who gave their CEO a substantial raise while also demoting/laying off others.

Should you still ask for a raise during a pandemic? It looked like a raise was in the cards – and then the pandemic struck. Should you still ask? Of course Better yet should food prices, taxes and cost of living go up during a pandemic? A raise during a pandemic? Only the CEO's and oligarchs of our mass media monopoly are permitted to increase their earnings during a pandemic. The rest of us live off cabbage and beans and french fires. Like good little Canadians.
