Vandals have caused significant damage at the former East Pictou school. The former East Pictou Rural High School’s days are numbered.
The school opened in 1952 and was used for a high school and middle school for decades before closing in 2020. After it closed, the building became the responsibility of the Municipality of Pictou County. While there was some interest in the building no deals were finalized.“I do not think there was a common issue that prevented the school from being sold, beyond risk that the parties were willing to take,” county CAO Brian Cullen told The News.
Making matters worse, the building has been vandalized numerous times. Many windows are broken and the county noted that it was becoming both unsightly and unsafe.Cullen said the Municipality received an estimate of $750,000 a couple of years ago for the demolition. He said he is not sure at this point whether there will be any attempts to sell the property once the building is razed.
“That will be a council decision after we have demolished the building,” he said. “At present, there has not been any consideration to do that.”It has been our privilege to have the trust and support of our East Coast communities for the last 200 years.
