Hypr3R Inc. has been ordered to pay more than $24 million in damages.

Instagram, the social media giant owned by Facebook, permits users to share posts, including texts, photos and videos, with other members of the public and connect with other users.

Instagram maintains relationships with other developers and businesses and permits them, subject to certain terms, to develop products or services to run on or in connection with their platform. After the changes, Hyp3r carried out “scraping” of personal information from users’ profiles on Instagram up until about August 2019 when Instagram announced that Hyp3r’s actions were not sanctioned and it was removing the company from its platform, according to the ruling.Article content

The award applies only to people who had their Instagram account on a public rather than a private setting, or about 2.4 million of the nearly 10 million Instagram users.
