Toronto ousted in back-and-forth qualifying series by Columbus, but NHL doesn't give out ribbons for exciting

Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares and teammates react after they were eliminated by the Columbus Blue Jackets during third period NHL Eastern Conference Stanley Cup playoff action in Toronto on Sunday, August 9, 2020.Before the season started, the closest Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas would come to predicting an outcome was, “Things are going to happen that we didn’t expect.”

That they had transformed in the space of four minutes from a habitual underachiever to a fully realized powerhouse. That view will be pushed out hard by management because it’s the easiest one to handle. Believing it is just a matter of time is beneficial for the continued job prospects of all involved.

Whenever the lights get bright, most of this club takes a powder. Later, when you ask about it, it’s a whole bunch of ‘yeah, geez, I should’ve been better. Won’t happen again.’The fanbase and media froth over it for a while, and then someone else on this perpetual loser gets a long-term deal that is over current market value. What a shocker that no one appears to be under pressure to get their act together.

It’s Unbelievable Toronto has some of the highest paid players in the league and can’t win shit?! Where’s the problem here? Coach? Or Dubas? Or both? I’m on the opinion of both! We need a Pat Burns type coach and we should have kept Hunter as GM not a stats keeping Kid!

Maybe wait an hour and allow the maple Leafs a moment to shower before verbal diarrhea...typical of Toronto scribes. Players outgunned by Columbus ...coached by a remarkable TORTORELLA...who got his players to push limits...succeeded! Maybe its the drinking water in TORONTO .?

JVR, Jake Gardiner, Tyler Bozak, Alex Steen, James Reimer, Phil Kessel, Naz Kadri, Tuukka Rask and Rob Thomas (who Mark Hunter wanted to draft instead of Timothy Liljegren 17 in 2017) are all in the playoffs. So are the Islanders.

Sad - no motivation to achieve anything in Canada since Trudeau has been in power- not sure what the excuse could be for the other 48 years

53 years without even making the Finals.......that is ridiculous.

Cue 5 days of tsn's 24 hour coverage of the leafs' collapse. sixtyseven

Yay for the Leafs' management. If it makes Canadians look like losers, you know all the years of dishonour will pay off (Why care what people who will never matter think. Right? And the lefty players can always move in if the cash isn't enough.).

Look on the bright side: we’re going to have three rounds of playoff hockey in Toronto this year, guaranteed all the way to the East final!

Consistency is key

Toronto Maple Leafs look to stay connected and finally take the next step - TSN.caThe Leafs had a 2-1 series lead against the Washington Capitals back in 2017. Toronto had the lead entering the third period of Game 7 in 2018 in Boston. And they had a 3-2 series lead on the Bruins last year. Those three golden opportunities turned into bitter losses and, hopefully for the Leafs, important lessons.
