The hereditary chiefs of the Wet'suwet'en sat down Thursday with senior government ministers to discuss a pipeline dispute that has caused protests across the country, shutting down freight and passenger rail services.

Federal Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Carolyn Bennett and British Columbia Indigenous Relations Minister Scott Fraser arrived separately for the meeting with the hereditary chiefs, starting long-sought talks in the impasse.

The chiefs' opposition to a natural gas pipeline cutting across their traditional territory, coupled with their efforts to limit police presence on their lands, have sparked shows of support across the country that have halted rail service for the past three weeks. Fraser understands the community's governance issues and Bennett represents the Crown in Canada, so the best way forward is for them to be at the table, he said.

The RCMP moved in to enforce that injunction on Feb. 6. Hours later, protesters started holding up railway traffic outside of Belleville, Ont., in solidarity with the Wet'suwet'en hereditary chiefs, thwarting freight and passenger rail travel. "This resident wanted to know if the current illegal blockades that are happening across Canada are being deemed as a terrorist activity?" Shipley asked.

So, when are the fakefive going to ask the terrorist Mohawks to take down all rail blockades as a show of good faith? Or does every one else have to give up something but not these relics?

A bunch of old geezer chiefs cowering the politicians into a corner of submission. We have weak politicians, Canadians deserve better.

Jail Our government shouldn't negotiate with domestic terrorists. Rightfully so. The Govt asked for them to ask the protesters to stand down. Standard in hostage negotiations. If you don't get anything, you don't negotiate.

Ross was correct, although Delgamuukw asserts title it didn't give title to the hereditary chiefs. If the community is in disagreement about their governance by all means they are the ones that need to assert that, but it is wrong to assume the hereditary chiefs have final say.
