Massed police — even if only for crowd control — can be a fearsome sight. Watching the police impassively watching the incendiary vandalizing of the national railway is fearful in a different way…

That was the plaintive cry from the north side of the tracks, where the Ontario Provincial Police were standing by, to the south side of the tracks, where some Tyendinaga Mohawks had put a burning tire on the Canadian National Railway tracks.

Such is what I saw at about 6:45 p.m. on Monday evening from the railway overpass on County Road 49, just south of Highway 401 near Marysville, Ont. I was accompanied on the overpass by a few television cameramen, doing their best to get video in the darkness. And we had three OPP officers with us, armed with smartphones, recording the setting of the track alight. The cameramen appeared more vigorous and engaged than the OPP officers.

After train 2279 went on its way, the Mohawks threw a flaming tire on the tracks itself. That brought about a dozen OPP vehicles streaming onto the site from the north side, and dozens of officers assembled to look earnestly at the fire set upon the tracks.

By the time I was there, the national media had departed. Later Monday night on “CTV National News,” Todd Battis filed a report about the blockades being cleared earlier in the day, concluding that the protesters were still on the scene and so were police, “making sure they stay off the tracks.” As the report was aired the people were off the tracks; the burning tires were on it instead.

This should not have been allowed to happen. The Mohawks are totally out of order and the OPP need to do their jobs and arrest those responsible for starting tire fires on the tracks—very dangerous situation that should never be tolerated under an6 circumstances.

Cdn_Eliana Useless cops!!! Now if I had driven by at 30km over the speed limit, the cops would have jumped in their cars, chased and ticket me. If I argued with them I may have been arrested or just given a beating on the highway with no witnesses! Our police are failing us, the tax payer

Beat the war drums and let’s get it on to settle it all

It seems the police didn't finish the job. The blockade was removed and 10 protesters were arrested. For some reason, some protesters were still there to start the fire. The police should have cleared the area from protesters and then stood guard ensuring they didn't return.

thought burning trees aka wood went against one of the protesters issues,,, ya know, cutting TREES down. Now they're burning wood, which 'apparently' would be polluting our air and causing Co2 concerns,,, I can't breath, help me. Go get a job ya bunch of hippies idiots

Those tracks will have to be replaced before trains can run.
