Organizations that represent farmers agree their sector needs assistance to transition to more sustainable technology to help in the fight against climate change, but they are divided on whether they should get an exemption from the carbon tax. As part of the Standing Committee on Agriculture’s study on Bill C-234, an Act to amend the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act, members heard testimony from five organizations on whether they would support the legislation, which aims to exempt propane and natural gas used for grain drying, heating and cooling livestock barns and greenhouses, as well as irrigation and steam flaking from the federal carbon pricing regime.
