MPs will be taking part in an emergency debate in the House of Commons Tuesday night on Teck Resources Ltd.'s announcement that it is withdrawing its application for an oilsands mine in Alberta.

The request for the special sitting to discuss the company's decision came from Alberta Conservative MP and natural resource critic Shannon Stubbs. Liberal MP and House of Commons Speaker Anthony Rota granted the request, and the debate is slated to begin around 6:30 p.m. EST.Specifically, Stubbs raised concerns about the national economic impact and the effects the withdrawal will have on the natural resource sector.

On Sunday evening, in a letter to the federal minister of environment and climate change, Teck CEO and President Don Lindsay said the decision was "difficult" to make. "This does not yet exist here today and, unfortunately, the growing debate around this issue has placed Frontier and our company squarely at the nexus of much broader issues that need to be resolved."

You mean a Liberal celebration party! Got what they wanted

we need a vote of non-confidence to get this idiot out asap

To bad so sad, not

raytoutofer Why even bother? Lib Socialists et al are all against it. It's a done deal. They would have cancelled it even if Teck hadn't stopped it. Teck will start it up again once Conservatives get a majority. This way, they're not waiting for cabinet approval for the next 2 years.

And yet another person speaks up against this scam the current gov’t is supporting. Funded by tides, etc.

JT always slower than molasses in January!

Thanks to the weak willed Trudeau gang. A few old geezer heredity chiefs made the Trudeau gang cower in the shadows of conciliatory foolishness as these old chiefs pranced around the country drumming up support to lay-off workers and harm the economy.

Teck Frontier withdrawal is a Trudeau and Liberal failure for Canadians and Indigenous communities. If this project was in Quebec it would have been approved immediately.

Teck Resources pulls Frontier oilsands mine project, blaming divisive debate over climate changeFor Alberta, which has struggled with the downturn in oil prices since 2014, Frontier would have been a boon Poke in the eye for Trudeau. Too much political unrest with a very weak P.M. You guys pick and choose what to put in your headline. Is that the principal reason it was dropped or the fact that the market doesn't dictate the investment? Divisive debate. Translation : Inept leadership
