68 vehicles have been reported stolen so far this year in Toronto, nearly twice as many as at this point last year, with an alarming rise in warm-up thefts, police Chief James Ramer says.

Fan of your car’s remote starter? Like to leave the engine on to warm up while you go inside to finish getting ready?Toronto police are issuing a stark warning over an increase in opportunistic car thefts from people leaving their cars running while unattended — presenting wannabe thieves with a golden opportunity to simply jump into a nice, warm vehicle and drive off.

He said police will soon be providing new messaging to discourage people from leaving their cars on the driveways to warm up. Ramer made the comments in a discussion on the rise in car thefts as an “issue of importance” for the city.
