Amber Bracken and Michael Toledano spent last weekend in jail for doing their jobs only to be freed under conditions that make it illegal for them to continue their work.

Bracken is an award-winning photojournalist and is on assignment for The Narwhal, a non-profit news organization. Toledano is a documentary filmmaker. The 13 others were protesting Coastal GasLink pipeline construction on their traditional territory.

Before COVID, the Wet’suwet’en action sparked rail and road blockades across the country. The arrests have reignited those actions. It may not have been the RCMP’s intent to sideline the only journalists there to witness and report on the arrests. But it’s certainly the result. Instead, he pointed out the stories of Friday’s arrests by heavily militarized police focused on the “subplot” of journalists’ arrests.

Because there was no way to get our stories out from the island, we flew out of Queen Charlotte City every day on a helicopter chartered from the logging company.
