Danny Austin's 10 Takeaways from Stampeders' loss to Bombers CFL

Two straight games against the Bombers resulted in two straight losses for the Stamps. The fact that most observers seem to be taking the Stampeders more seriously as the second-best team in the CFL despite losing both games tells you everything you need to know about the Bombers: They’re No. 1.Article content

There was lots to like from the Stampeders on Saturday night. There was lots to learn about them, too.Article contentI’m going to start with attendance, because it seems to be a talking point. Cynics can focus on empty seats. That’s their right. There will always be people who think it’s cute to rain on a parade.

Eight times, the Bombers succeeded in getting a new set of downs after being in positions on second down where they needed seven-or-more yards. It’s understandable that that’s frustrating for a guy such as Thurman. It was especially notable how effective they were when they got near the goal-line in the second half and gave the ball to Ka’Deem Carey — we’re going to talk about him in a minute, because boy, is he ever having himself a season.

Heading into the game, the Stamps were allowing only 82.2 rushing yards per game. Only the Bombers and the Saskatchewan Roughriders were allowing less, and the Bombers essentially ran for twice as many yards as the Stamps generally allow on Saturday night.Article content Head coach Dave Dickenson did mention that it was probably a knee injury of some sort for Roberson and that he was hopeful it wasn’t too serious. He also said that for McEwen, it was lower-body.Article content

The Stampeders’ longest passing play of the day was to Reggie Begelton for 23 yards. It’s worth noting that 21 of those yards came after he had caught the ball. One of those kicks was for a career-high 53 yards, which is astonishing when you consider that he is 37-years-old and has been kicking field-goals with remarkable consistency since all the way back in 2011 for the Stampeders.
