by four or five millennia, and during Ottoman rule, they fluctuated from around 1.5-3.5 per cent of the population. After Zionism took hold, others did come to fulfil the movement’s ideology of working the land, in a pioneer sense. They did massive fundraising abroad to buy tens of thousands of acres, and focused on draining swamps and preparing the salty, arid, eroded soil to be reforested.
Willing settlers they were not, but these refugees now make up around half of Israel’s population. Added to these were, of course, weary European Holocaust survivors, desperate and resolute to put down roots. Today, out of Israel’s 9.2 million residents, only about 30 per cent are descended from these Ashkenazi Jews.
Sixteen years later, half the area has reverted to sand, rubble and waste, having been ransacked or neglected, and the other half is a Hamas training complex.
If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck....... Same as the Jewish press balking at use of the term 'apartheid' when describing the Palestinians situation.
Good article.
You can't look at the bigger picture and see the plight of the Palestinians and reach this conclusion without adopting a horrific worldview where ethnic groups are right to try to dominate one another. Israel's nationalistic/theocratic attitude needs to change.
This is a good article with some historical elisions but nevertheless is important as a corrective to the predominant narrative right now.
Yikes
expertise here because she's Jewish (nothing wrong with that, except if you expect us to think that gives you intellectual prowess over the conflict)
A laughable article from an embarrassment of a rag
It’s a settler colonial state. Just as is Canada. If you can’t agree that indigenous children anywhere (both Canada and Palestine) deserve to grow up without fear… then you are a failed human race. And yes Jews did live in PALESTINE. What’s the Zionist need to rename a country
'UN Security Council states that Israel's settlement activity constitutes a 'flagrant violation' of international law and has 'no legal validity'. The UN Human Rights Council calls the Israeli settlements and related activities a violation of international law.'
Fact is Israel’s “borders” keep expanding. While it’s true Jews have been there for several millenia, so have Palestinians and other arabs. While Israel’s right to exist is beyond dispute, it’s right to expand its borders and displace others is not.
This article is well written and correct, there is fault on both sides here but this is not all Israel’s fault by any means. Ask yourself why Hamas puts their Headquarters in schools and under hospitals.
Did Netanyahu write this? Bibi, this you?
daniellekubes... Are you suggesting we become ok with the killing civilians - beating grandmothers & whoever they can get their hands on, bombing kids? Because it kinda sounds like it?🤔
This is what happens when you steal someone's home and give it to someone else.
The vast majority of the world disagrees
Uh yeah it is. Those aren't actual reasons.
