They can be especially expensive in rural parts of the riding where there is no public transportation and limited options when it comes to other services, Ellis noted.“Most of us live in single-family dwellings so we have to live in that sense and, of course, you do have to go to the grocery store, go to the doctor, etcetera, so it’s a bit of a unique experience,” he said. “Large parts of the rest of the country may not understand the challenges that creates for people.
He talked about working with the province to help bring internationally educated nurses from the Philippines to help address one shortage when it comes to critical healthcare workers. “I’ve certainly been vocal about it before and will continue to do so to try and make people understand that the time for talking about it is over and now is the time for action,” he said. “That’s something we’ll work closely with the province on as well.”
“You can make impacts there. You can make impacts through private members’ bills and I think the other thing that does need to be said is, there are times we need to work with our colleagues across the aisle as well to try and get things done. That is something that does happen and will continue to happen … it too is an important part of how things work.
