With warm weather comes bigger crowds, but some worry the bad behaviour could put the viability of these sites at risk in the future

On Monday, Mike Vincent, a guide who operates out of the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, called it “disheartening.”Vincent was on a guided hiking tour with a couple from Edmonton when he came across noticeable amounts of garbage on the shores of Lake Agnes, just west of Lake Louise.Vincent said that without international visitors to the park he’s been excited to meet more Albertans than ever before, but he said it’s revealing a concerning pattern.

Marla Zapach, a board member of the Alberta Hiking Association who lives in Nordegg, said the association’s members have seen much of the same thing, even on more remote hiking trails. Alberta Parks did not immediately respond to a request for clarification on the status of plans for the 17 and 164 sites.

Alberta Environment and Parks and Parks Canada are also concerned about the number of visitors parking along the side of main roads in provincial and national parks. “We will continue to monitor and respond to concerns and work with the public on proper disposal of garbage,” the statement said. “Pack out what you pack in, if you can’t find a bin. Exposed trash can attract wildlife, including bears.”
