The tragedy unfolding in long-term care homes across the country has shed new light on persistent problems in the elder-care system.

Residents of these facilities account for 10 per cent of COVID-19 cases and 72 per cent of deaths in Canada.

The lack of funding means that home care workers make about $4 less an hour than those who work in long-term care, making it hard to retain staff, VanderBent said. It said the provincial government passed legislation last year that changed the way home care is delivered and broke down barriers that have separated it from other parts of the system.Story continues below advertisement

Mackenzie found in a 2019 report that approximately 4,200 long-term care beds in the province are occupied by seniors who could live in the community with home support or assisted living.Ontario long-term care residents describe devastating impact of isolation during COVID-19 pandemic Before COVID-19, many families put their loved ones into long-term care because they assumed it would be safer than being at home, Mackenzie said.

More accountability by Goverment !

No more funding to 'For profit homes' unless it is specifically for upgrades to the home or staffing level increases that are tracked and confirmed. I have no interest in increasing their dividend yield.

Everyone knows that care homes are using the foreign workers program to get cheap labour. These workers in turn can't afford to not go to work so they go knowing that they are sick. Easy answer get rid of the FWP wages will go up and we won't have this problem.

Not to for profit/private centers

A family friend has been in hospital taking a bed for THREE years waiting for a LTC bed. In a small community where hospital beds are greatly needed.

Needed to prep for this in the 90’s knowing the boomers would need care homes as biggest population. LTC beds are not affordable & wait times are ridiculous.

Long-term care never should have been privatized. Gov. needs to hire good, capable people to manage and work in ALL long-term care facilities.

I really just hope I die before needing to live in a care home... who’s with me As soon as my dick stops working I’m fine to call it over.

I am all for public funding of homes that are not for profit but if we are paying to line the pockets of privately owned homes and their owners, board of directors, no way!

We needed this long before covid19

they need to be run by the government not private

Yes and the funds to support the program should be taken from politicians pay and their golden pension.

All community care needs funding increase including Public Health

I support, however If everything I've read in the news is true. I suspect that there are significantly less residents now.

We’re all going to be elderly one day.

My mom was at home palliative in B.C. the system there was amazing they took care of everything so we could just be together

15k a body ! You out covid, the home receives 15k.they want the people to die

We remember 2000-2001. Do you? Or are you just a government talking head?

Yes if it knocks the cost down. It’s nothing for a care room to cost $5000 a month. There needs to be a serious investigation into all of them with bad covid records. There’s a good case being made for seniors to stay in their own homes and get in home care versus ltc’s

These bought off news outlets are always trying to validate and shove the 'pandemic' into our minds. Even indirectly as we see here. They get more money for saying 'pandemic', 'covid19' or 'vaccine'. We are already safe and there is nothing to fear.

As long as it's not to fund for profit homes!!!

I'm not sure, if the funds goes to executives with already inflated wages then what's the point. See hospital executives with million $ salaries and yah that is a head scratcher

De-privatize, classify as non-profit, & THEN provide funding to get them up to standards..otherwise any $$ you give them just goes straight into the pockets of politician’s buddies & their shareholders who are currently lining their greedy lil pockets on the deaths of the elderly

Also, LTC homes should NOT be for profit!

It is also a good idea to fund education for nurses, health care workers etc! This will allow workers to have the most up to date dedication! Cutbacks on nurses and other health care professionals working at long term care homes have decreased safe, effective care for residents.

This needed to done decades ago. As soon as my mother moved into long term care it was evident how severely under resourced these homes were 😡. Staff work hard and deserve better working conditions.

Intentional mismanagement does not justify an increase in funding. Such only encourages further mismanagement.

. Only 1 in 9 ? I think with with a proper system and process in place, this can be much higher! 🤔 The health care system is totally messed up and wasteful! We all know this. .

MeMiller777 Melissa, I left a voice message requesting a moment to talk about my mom's case. Pat

Lessons from Mariann, the Ont. long-term care home that's had no COVID-19 casesThe Mariann Home in Richmond Hill, Ont. has been a happy exception to the devastating COVID-19 outbreaks at Canada's long-term care facilities, with no cases or deaths to date. Mariann Administrator Bernard Boreland was quick off the mark in recognizing the severity of the outbreak early, though he is also quick to deflect credit. ....so somebody read the SARs report from years ago! mini_bubbly This is excellent. 👏 Some of this was asked of fordnation for all LTC hones and he did little to nothing. JustinTrudeau was also caught off guard and he failed to update the the Harper government outdated PPE. Liberals and Conservatives care not about us. We have to help each other.

Ontario’s long-term care homes were neglected, sector needs reform, commission saysReport says Ontario’s nursing homes were unprepared for a pandemic thanks to years of neglect, and that the province failed to learn lessons from the SARS epidemic Private-for-profit long-term care homes...what could go wrong? 🤦 ¿And who was responsible for that? That is the result of 15 years of liberals corruption. Union sector taking over and turned it all about them, jobs, money, benefits. Never about the elderly. We tore down the asylums for the mentally ill and the disabled. Nobody wants to live in a warehouse so why should old people. Smaller homelike settings.
