The final vote was 78 in favour and 29 opposed.

The Liberals and PQ, however, opposed the bill for completely different reasons. While the Liberals say Bill 96 goes too far and tramples the rights of minorities, the PQ says it does not go far enough to protect French.

One former Liberal, Chomedey MNA Guy Ouellette voted with his old party against the bill but another former Liberal, Maurice-Richard MNA Marie Montpetit, voted in favour of the bill. Former PQ MNA Sylvain Roy voted in favour. The three now sit as independents.

It's time Canadians have a political discussion about s.33 - the notwithstanding clause. This section doesn't promote democracy but instead allows for mob rule. It greatly devalues the Charter and fails minorities. It's a sad day in Quebec. cdnpoli cdnpolitics

Quebec needs to go. Hateful society.

Trying so hard to save a dead language.

A dark day for our province.

Time for the rest of us to demand we be served in English only then. I’ve had enough of the 50 years of forced bilingualism. Pandering to Quebec to make sure they were first at the trough for government jobs.

Everyone will go nuts for a few days, then things will calm down. It's now for the lawyers to do their thing. This will make it all the way to the Supreme Court.
