“I thought for sure I was writing on a completely niche topic that nobody knew about and that probably nobody would care about,” she said. “I’m so, so thrilled this story is connecting with so many people and that they’re seeing themselves in this book, even though it’s told from the perspective of a black, gay sleeping car porter in 1929.”
As part of the Giller winner’s tour, Mayr was recently in Mexico City, where she dined with the Canadian ambassador, as well as speaking at a book fair in Guadalajara.Article content A University of Calgary professor, Mayr was born and raised in Calgary. She attended Western Canada High School before moving on to the University of Calgary, University of Alberta and University of New South Wales in Australia.“My next goal — and I have big plans but who knows how it’ll pan out — I really want to write a Stephen King- horror novel,” she said.
