I had an unsuspected brain hemorrhage detected by means of a timely CT scan many years ago. Did the Beatles save my life?

in 2012 by two radiologists from McMaster University. Doctors Zeev Maizlin and Patrick Vos looked closely at the financial records and found that EMI had poured about £100,000 into the development of the CT scanner — most of it undoubtedly taken from the pocketbooks of Beatles record buyers. But the radiologist/historians point out that the most crucial funding had come from Britain’s Department of Health and Social Security .

DHSS advisors were excited by the potential of Hounsfield’s invention, but they couldn’t fund a private company’s research efforts directly, so, with Benjamin Disraeli-like audacity, they agreed to order four CT machines at a price of £150,000 apiece, before the first such machine had actually been built.

The McMaster duo very sensibly concludes that if a CT scan has saved your bacon, you should probably thank the British taxpayer and the visionaries at DHSS. It’s not as though the Beatles need the credit, write Maizlin and Vos, as “the group’s input into the world’s cultural heritage is valuable enough and does not require to be decorated by nonexistent connection to the development of the new revolutionary imaging modality.

The Beatles, for most of their lifetime as a band, earned no more than a farthing from every vinyl Beatles record EMI sold. Maybe they don’t need our thanks for the transformation of medical imaging, but we can definitely be pleased that they weren’t exploited by someone else.
