Coun. Alanna Jankov, who represents downtown Charlottetown, pushed hard for a park patrol initiative in the city’s five heritage squares. Patrols began on Aug. 29. -Dave Stewart/The GuardianCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Charlottetown Police Services has launched a program that willin the city’s five heritage parks in response to complaints from residents and a push from some of their councillors.
SaltWire Network emailed MacConnell on Aug. 29 to request addtional information about the program, including how many people have been hired, but there was no response by deadline. However, during a recent meeting of council’s protective and emergency services committee, MacConnell said he spoke to staff at the National Police Security Service about extending the program. Similar security is provided in Victoria Park.
“There was a definite need,’’ Jankov told SaltWire Network in an interview on Aug. 29. “I heard a lot of communication from my residents that they were seeing activity happening in the parks that was not enabling others to enjoy the parks, so this was an idea I suggested.’’ Andrea Battison, a longtime resident of downtown Charlottetown, says increased garbage and rowdiness in the area is a result of the city encouraging business and tourism growth, without supplying services like garbage cans and public washrooms.
