CBC is at its weakest in a generation, but radical change is the worst option GlobeArts

Jennifer McGuire, seen here on Aug. 1, 2017, was responsible for English-language news content and programming across the public broadcaster’s multiple platforms.Another week, another fuss about the CBC. In a confusing and ceaselessly changing world, it’s heart-warming that you can rely on a fuss about CBC coming at regular intervals.

In the larger picture, I will assert here what I told a group of journalism students last month: CBC TV is at its weakest point in a generation. It also has the weakest leadership in a generation, in president Catherine Tait and in Barbara Williams, vice-president of English services in charge of English-language TV, radio and digital services. Look at the needless confusion over production deals with Netflix. Plus the frantic attempts to establishas a money-making hit.

In the matter of sports CBC TV should have Olympics coverage and coverage of our national men’s and women’s teams. Canadian taxpayers fund a great deal of sports in Canada and the very idea that the public broadcaster can dodge coverage of what we fund is reprehensible. In particular the public broadcaster should be offering more, not less, women’s sports. That’s part of its public-service job.

The fact is, current CBC top management has no grasp of excellence. A less radical solution to what the two J-school professors suggest, is doing less drama but aiming for greatness. If that means quality over quantity, fine. Besides, I’m not sure Los Angeles has room enough to hold the vast army of bitter Canadian creatives who would assemble there if CBC TV cancelled scripted programming.

GlobeArts As much as they and their defenders argue, there is a left wing bias to their reporting, softball questions to certain politicians and dogged hard hitting questions and editorial slants against others. About half the population is turned off by that = lowest ever ratings.

GlobeArts All they have to do is put stuff on the air that people want to see and be entertained. They should tone down the propaganda..... ergo the imbedded progressive themes in a lot of their shows and become a little less biased in their news reporting. Nobody likes being preached to.

GlobeArts Isn't every media - including the Globe and Mail, at it's weakest in a generation? Even that frothy right wing attempt at Canadian Fox News - Sun Media - had to shutter it's doors because it failed.

GlobeArts Yes, radical change needs to be administered, they have to feign impartiality. They haven’t been doing so in the past 7-10 years

GlobeArts I agree. Just get rid of it

GlobeArts CBC is a solution eternally in search of a problem. Now it’s going to get us to watch more women’s sports? Please. CBC produces garbage, nobody watches it, and the country is nevertheless just fine (or at least, its problems are not TV-related). Put it out of our misery.

GlobeArts Whole Lotta Rosie is the best news anchor since Nolton Nash.

GlobeArts TheNational is a national disaster. Far too many commercials and little investigative reporting. Family Feud unwatchable. Gerry Dee needs a permanent place on Survivor and off CBC for good. Great dramas such as Murdoch Mysteries and Burden of Truth. Let’s us have more of those.

GlobeArts Defunding cbc is the best option or getting the Liberal Party of Canada to start funding it. cdnpoli

GlobeArts Just close it down. It is really not worth fixing

GlobeArts I love CBC! I listen to CBC Radio, watch CBC Gem, and I’m so grateful we have a public broadcasting network that has shows like Kim’s Convenience. I also like the features like Takaya.

GlobeArts A complete 180 is all that’s left to save it. When it gets defunded, they’ll have to rely on numbers not feelings.

GlobeArts Maybe fix the sensationalized style of reporting on The National. What's with the exaggerated voice intonations, hand gesticulations? What happened to 'The Mainsbridge' balanced style of journalism? Seriously and sorry.

GlobeArts DefundCBC

GlobeArts Don't fix what ain't broke.

GlobeArts CBC is Canada's version of CNN. FakeNews They are both quickly swirling down the toilet bowl.
