Even the U.S. has a smaller percentage of COVID-19 deaths in long-term care homes

provides a damning snapshot of senior care as of May 25, when LTC residents made up 81 per cent of all reported COVID-19 deaths in the country compared to an average of 42 per cent among all countries studied.

Researchers point to limitations that prevent some comparisons — countries vary in COVID-19 testing and reporting practices, and in their definition of long-term care. Johnson notes countries that implemented additional LTC precautions at the same time as standard stay-at-home orders had fewer LTC infections and deaths.

But for now, she notes several of Canada’s hardest-hit facilities are still grappling with the devastating fallout of existing infections. There needs to be a fundamental reprioritization, focusing attention and resources, time and effort into the sector right away. The contrast in LTC deaths is even more stark between provinces and territories, says the report, which notes LTC deaths represented more than 70 per cent of all COVID-19 deaths in Quebec, Ontario and Alberta and 97 per cent of all deaths in Nova Scotia.

Everybody screwed up.

Slum care

The Canadian situation is awful but it's also true that fewer Americans are in long term care because it's unaffordable.

It is no secret that nursing homes in Canada had horrible safety standards for decades. Everyone knows how awful they are. No surprise to be honest. One staff for 20 or 30 people had become acceptable. Neglect is the result. Elder abuse runs rampant. It's a disgrace.

Peter St. Onge: The worst-case scenario that closed CanadaJunk Science Week: Doomsday scenarios from Imperial London College predicted tens of millions of deaths all over the world. The model was deeply flawed Cool last name. Even if Imperial wrong, other evidence fully justified following centuries-old public health measures: devastation of Italy’s health system & deaths among our own seniors. So, yes, criticize Imperial studies but only fair to recognize that was not only thing driving response. Just an addendum to this story - Stats Canada website shows deaths attributed to influenza and pneumonia for 2018 at 8,511.
