Britain is in talks with AstraZeneca for additional doses of its COVID-19 vaccine that will have been modified to better target the Beta coronavirus variant first identified in South Africa, health minister Matt Hancock said on Wednesday.

Britain has previously secured 100 million doses of the vaccine, developed at the University of Oxford and licensed to AstraZeneca.

South Africa put use of AstraZeneca's shot on hold in February after data showed it gave minimal protection against mild-to-moderate infection caused by the country's dominant variant, now known as Beta.Oxford considers the variant top priority for vaccine developers, and AstraZeneca has targeted the development of new vaccines against variants by the autumn.

Hancock's speech came before he hosts a summit of Group of Seven health ministers in Oxford, which starts on Thursday.

AstraZeneca recipients can get Moderna or Pfizer for second COVID-19 shot: advisory committeeNACI’s published report says AstraZeneca recipients can be offered the same vaccine if they want it, or can be given either Pfizer or Moderna for their second shot The advice from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization affects more than two million Canadians who received the AstraZeneca vaccine before provinces stopped using it for first doses last month. No thanks - I took AZ and 3 days later is was “paused”. This is new science and they clearly don’t have all the answers. I will take a second AZ to be on the safe side. Has anyone heard when AZ might be shipped into pharmacies ... believe they are still only offering the remnants of expiring doses.
